Unconventional Beauty is an installation piece that challenges the rigid societal standards of beauty that marginalize and exclude certain communities, such as the trans community. The work transforms objects that are typically seen as unwanted, undesirable, or disregarded into something beautiful through artistic choices and presentation. By doing so, it offers a commentary on how beauty standards are often used to judge both people and objects alike, and how we can relate as marginalized people to these discarded objects, as well as how their beauty truly shines through despite of society.
Unconventional Beauty is my act of defiance against the structures of power that attempt to erase and dehumanize marginalized people. With symbolism laced into the images, this is a piece that speaks to those who feel unseen, those who are willing to learn, and even those who seek to silence voices like mine. If my work sparks hate, it will only prove my point further, but if it sparks hope, it will show the power of art to inspire change. Ultimately, this work is a call to confront uncomfortable truths and to resist the forces that seek to divide us. Through this piece, I challenge viewers to rethink their perceptions of beauty, identity, and humanity.
